The Polar Express

reviews No Comments »

while staying over elaine’s mom’s place in virginia beach, Ki and I
took the kids (Ethan, Alec and their cousins Caity and Jackie) to see The Polar Express.
It was definitely more enjoyable than i initially expected. i wasn’t
totally interested in seeing it after enjoying “The Incredibles” so
much. But since Alec is a ‘train nut’ we just had to see it. it was definitely a good family flick especially this time of the year.

lowlight - the ‘hot chocolate’ sequence on the train. the animation of
the dancing waiters was definitely lacking and unnatural. could have
done without it altogether.

highlight - the train sequences. nicely done. i can see why they also have an IMAX version of the movie.

well, i’m back from my internet-less stay at my MIL’s house. i guess it was sort of refreshing not logging on for a couple days. so, what did i miss? anything new with you? i have to say that it’s always a great feeling coming back home from a trip. coming back to the familiar and routine. yes, it’s sad but true, i’m a creature of habit. gotta have my daily routine or i’m pretty much lost and out of my element. don’t tell me it’s because i’m getting older and becoming set in my ways??!!?? …oh the horror! blow like cyclone, my second wind! blow like typhoon, my second wind! blow like tempest, my second wind!!….well, gotta go and catch up on some work. laterz!

Ethan, Alec and I finally got around to seeing the movie that everybody’s been talking about the last few weeks. What can I say that hasn’t already been said about the film? Nothing really. but simply put, it was fantastic. How can anyone follow up a perfect movie like ‘Finding Nemo’, anyway? Well, Pixar definitely found a way. bravo Pixar, bravo.

thankful…

..just thought i’d share this email that’s being passed around for thanksgiving. enjoy.

I Am Thankful

For the wife who says it’s hot dogs tonight, Because she is home with me, And not out with someone else.

For the husband who is on the sofa Being a couch potato, Because he is home with me and not out at the bars.

For the teenager who is complaining about doing dishes Because that means she is at home, Not on the streets.

For the taxes that i pay Because it means that I am employed.

For the mess to clean after a party Because it means that I have been surrounded by friends.

For the clothes that fit a little too snug Because it means I have enough to eat.

For my shadow that watches me work Because it means I am out in the sunshine.

For a lawn that needs mowing, Windows that need cleaning, And gutters that need fixing Because it means I have a home.

For all the complaining I hear about the government Because it means that we have freedom of speech.

For the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot Because it means I am capable of walking

And that I have been blessed with transportation. For my huge heating bill because it means I am warm.

For the lady behind me in church That sings off key because it means That I can hear.

For the pile of laundry and ironing Because it means I have clothes to wear.

For weariness and aching muscles At the end of the day because it means I have been capable of working hard.

For the alarm that goes off In the early morning hours Because it means that I am alive.

And finally.

For too much e-mail Because it means I have friends who are thinking of me.

Send this to someone you care about.

I just did.

Bland Aid: Do They Know It’s Crap?

oh good. at least i can rest easy now because a couple of days ago after listening to the newly released remake of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ I thought all those years of drumming had finally affected my hearing. Apparently there are tons of other folks that agree that the song is total crap. a truly needless remake. According to a recent article in the Scotsman, listeners jammed a radio station’s switchboard that had just played the tune, demanding the station never play the song ever again.

We played it for the first time at 8am today and were amazed at the response from our listeners, said Keri Jones, station DJ and managing director. People were saying it is awful rubbish. They were quite passionate about it it was quite overwhelming. All the lights on the switchboard lit up and we had about 50 calls within minutes of it being played. In the end it got so busy it was pointless answering, everyone was saying the same thing anyway. It’s rubbish, more Bland Aid than Band Aid.”…We banned it because we believe in going with what out listeners say. In the meantime we will continue playing the original.

a late night filled with expletives and hair pulling…

man, have you ever been so frazzled by a difficult situation that you couldn’t see the solution to the problem which was just sitting there right in front of your nose? i was in it up to my eyeballs yesterday and i couldn’t see my way out. i have a big deadline coming up friday and everything went to crap yesterday and i didn’t know where to begin to stop my work from unraveling. i ended up staying late at work up until 10pm last night running around trying desperately to troubleshoot every detail until i could pinpoint where the problem originated from. by 10, i just patched up what i could, called it a day and went on home. with a night’s rest, i came back in the morning and I realized instantly what I had done wrong. Just a small, simple mistake that caused me hours and hours of frustration. All could have been prevented if I had taken a breather and just checked the obvious.what an idiot. :| … well, at least i can still make my deadline. …hopefully..

you know what pisses me off? people who plan to meet up with you at a certain time and then totally forget about it. you know, a person who says to you “oh, i’ve been meaning take some time and hang out with you. say, let’s get together at 10 on thursday, alright?” .. and then totally don’t show up or just plain neglect to tell you that something else came up. …and not just once but habitually. an habitual line-steppa! [as Charlie Murphy would say…] look, If you don’t actually *want* to spend time with me and you’re just saying it just to be nice, just don’t bother setting up a time to begin with. really. i mean, come on, if you’re not going to follow through with it just don’t suggest anything to me, alright? just keep it to yourself. what the *f* is the benefit saying stuff like that to me in the first place??? obviously, I mean *that* much to you that you can’t get yourself to write this down on a calendar to remind yourself or somehow get yourself to a phone so that you could simply let me know that you can’t be there??what am i, some kind of slime??and what kind of “so-called” friend are you anyway??you’re definitely on *my list* now and you ain’t comin’ off anytime soon. yeah, that’s right, you should be scared! where, oh where are those people with integrity? someone please clue me in ….because i’m in dire need of some people of quality in my life. just one or two. i’m not asking for much…….anyone? …anyone? …bueller? …bueller?

Ethan and Alec’s song of the moment: Let’s get it started
[imagine a seven year old and a three year old in a minivan singing along to the radio…]

Let’s get it started in *HA!*, Let’s get it started in here!, Let’s get it started in *HA!*, Let’s get in started in here!….

[set on repeat, over and over…til it gets really, really old…. i mean old..]

[…did i mention that it got old?…. yes, indeed, it got old… *really old.*]

DVD of the moment: Bionicle 2 - Legends of Metru Nui

..i’m not sure what the story is about. i fell asleep while watching it with the kids ten minutes into the movie. twice.

Alec’s phrase of the moment: our three year old likes to say - “That’s mustgusting!!”
it’s so cute that Elaine and I haven’t corrected him yet. heh.

a parent’s embarrassing moment: while at soccer this past weekend after halftime, Ethan got back on the field and apparently didn’t pay attention to the switch-over and kept on trying to take the ball to the wrong goal.
[to the other parents watching the game] yup, everyone, that’s *my son* out there!

Dave Ling, Rock Journalist

I recently stumbled across rock journalist Dave Ling’s website. He’s got some well-written, in-depth articles on various “classic” rock bands archived on his site.

check it out.

Here’s a great article on one of my all time favs, Asia.

ahh, the hazards of being a world-renowned drummer..

music Comments Off

..OK, maybe not *world*-renowned….I guess that’s stretching it a bit……
let’s see, how about just “famous”….No? … OK, infamous?

.. well-known … ummmm,

..well-liked

…by his pals???

well, you get the idea. anyway, apparently the position of my snare drum wasn’t exactly optimal for me this weekend. for those not aware, the snare drum is positioned … umm, between the drummers legs. and if the drummer doesn’t pay attention to where it’s placed as well as the height of the snare, body parts can get in the way. *NOT THAT* body part. (get your mind outta da gutta!!) :P

but my left thigh is bruised up a bit today. that’s where my left hand and the butt-end of the drum stick come down when hitting the snare drum … repeatedly. and when you’re in the middle of playing a set, concentrating on the music, the other band members, the groove, the timing, the tempo, the next complex drum fill coming up, signals coming from the band leader, the bass lines, the momentum of the song itself etc., things like your thigh getting hurt won’t get noticed til sometime after you get off stage. or as in my case, the next morning. also, my left thumb is a bit bruised up as well. these are all signs of me overplaying. probably related to the fact that Darrell Green was in da house yesterday. you know, the famous ex-Washington Redskins *7-time Pro Bowler* Defensive Back! He was our guest speaker and when ya got someone like that watching ya, you tend to play a little bit harder and ya basically kick everything up a notch. and the last word was that he may be involved with our future recording project as a financial backer…. but it’s all still up in the air. as of right now, things have been pushed so far back i’m not going to even hold my breath about it. actually, one of the guitarists and our keyboard player are setting up a *demo* studio in their house so we’ll at least start getting some demos together….anyway… so, i’m *injured* and therefore, i’m gonna take it easy at work today. ..yeah, that’s it. that’s the ticket. ;)
