after listening to Hillsong’s fairly recent release - Mighty to Save i have to say that i’m a bit relieved. quite frankly it just felt that they were in a bit of a rut creatively with recent mediocre albums like For All You’ve Done and God He Reigns. with the previous albums it seemed like the songwriters were just going through the motions issuing out cookie cutter material based on the overused Hillsong template. On Mighty to Save, the writing seems to be more focused and the overall quality reaching closer to their past benchmark albums Blessed (2002), Hope (2003) and Shout to the Lord (1996). it’s not their best but i do believe they’ve gotten past their creative rut. the album starts out a bit weak with a couple of non-descript upbeat praise songs but things soon become a bit more interesting once we reach the songs You Alone Are God, At the Cross and From the Inside Out. it’s also nice to see Hillsong try to step out of their usual “sound” and try something a bit different like the subdued Found and the gospel-lite sounding (a la Lakewood Live) More to See. Other highlights include: Oceans Will Part and Mighty to Save.

here’s the youtube video for the song At the Cross

Oh Lord You’ve searched me, You know my way
Even when I fail You, I know You love me
Your holy presence surrounding me
In every season, I know You love me, I know You love me.

At the cross I bow my knee, where Your blood was shed for me
There’s no greater love than this.
You have overcome the grave, Your glory fills the highest place,
What can separate me now?

You go before me, You shield my way, Your hand upholds me
I know You love me and when the earth fades,
Falls from my eyes and You stand before me,
I know You love me, I know You love me.

You tore the veil, You made a way
When You said that it is done.
