Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd

movies and TV, internet buzz 1 Comment »

Johnny Depp is one of those rare artists in the film industry that always seem to strive to challenge himself as an actor and not just look toward increasing his celebrity status. OK, ok, yes, Depp “cashed in” with the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, but on the whole, the man chooses his roles very carefully and always tends to avoid the obvious. if you look through his list of movies, you can easily see the variety and depth of the roles he has taken on over the years. i loved his CIA Agent Sands character in Robert Rodriguez’s Once Upon a Time in Mexico. even though Sands was crooked and evil, Depp portrayed him in a way that you felt sorry for the guy in the end. in one of my favorite scenes… in fact probably in my top two favorite Johnny Depp scenes of all time, is the part where he ends up finding the best puerco pibil that he’s tasted anywhere. he ends up saying, “El, you really must try this because it’s puerco pibil. It’s a slow-roasted pork, nothing fancy. It just happens to be my favorite, and I order it with a tequila and lime in every dive I go to in this country. And honestly, that is the best it’s ever been anywhere. In fact, it’s too good. It’s so good that when I’m finished, I’ll pay my check, walk straight into the kitchen and shoot the cook. Because that’s what I do. I restore the balance to this country. And that is what I would like from you right now. Help keep the balance by pulling the trigger.” my other choice for best Johnny Depp scene is in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. well, every Depp scene in the movie is gold but the way Depp says “Everything in this room is eatable. Even *I’m* eatable. But that is called cannibalism, my dear children, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies” is simply the work of a master!! he’s a genius I tell you, pure genius! you know, Tim Burton seems to always get the best out of Johnny Depp. they work well together. in fact they’re collaborating again in the upcoming movie musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. that’s right, a film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim/Hugh Wheeler musical. the movie will hit the theaters on December 21 and it’s currently creating quite a buzz. visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site to check out the new movie trailer. from the look of things, it appears to be another wonderful Burton/Depp collaboration. and how can we resist getting a chance to see Depp for the first time singing in a feature film. there he goes again, stretching himself as an actor. be sure to visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace to see some exclusive interviews with Depp about his involvement in the project. and by adding Sweeney Todd to your friends list on myspace, you’ll automatically be entered for a chance to meet Depp at the Global Premiere! check the site for all the details.

quite often i hear the same ol’ story from other bloggers about the limitations using free blogging platforms like blogger, livejournal and xanga. complaints range from not being able to customize templates to losing entire entries due to buggy software. i can see the draw to free sites like blogspot and even i started blogging on a free host many years ago. but if you enjoy blogging enough to take it seriously, you need to move to your very own hosted website. it’s really not as complicated as it seems. hosting services like even have specialized hosting plans just for bloggers. their blog hosting plans conveniently have either Movable Type already installed or you can opt for wordpress hosting instead. their Movable Type “blogger” plan features 2GB of space, 20GB of bandwidth and the ability to add up to 11 domains to the account for only $9.99 a month. they also offer a cheaper “starter” plan which includes wordpress, 1GB of space, 10GB of bandwidth and the ability to have up to 2 domains on the plan for just $6.99 a month. National Memory Screening Day

years ago I had the opportunity to volunteer at a local nursing home. it was such an eye opening experience for me. serving meals to the residents there, cleaning after them and participating in activities with them, made me realize how fragile life really is. especially seeing a couple of patients who were exhibiting early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. at various times they were functional and aware of their surroundings but at other times they were confused and needed assistance on tasks they would normally be able to perform themselves. it’s sobering to learn that 24 million people worldwide are currently living with Alzheimer’s. what’s even more alarming is that the cause of the neurodegenerative disease is still unknown and with top scientists around the world researching this disease, a cure has yet to be found. so the best that one can do on an individual level is to catch the onset of the disease at the earliest stage possible. that’s why the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is having a National memory Screening Day on November 13th. events to promote early detection of the disease as well as information on treatments and resources will be held all across the country. each event site will also offer free screenings for those concerned about memory loss or dementia.

the following questions might help you or a loved one decide about getting a memory screening:
- Am I becoming more forgetful?
- Do I have trouble concentrating?
- Do I have difficulty performing familiar tasks?
- Do I have trouble recalling words or names in conversation?
- Do I sometimes forget where I am?
- Have family or friends told me that I am repeating questions or saying the same thing over and over again?
- Am I misplacing things more often?
- Have I become lost when walking or driving in a familiar neighborhood?
- Have my family or friends noticed changes in my mood, behavior, personality, or desire to do things?

and with a cure yet to be found for this disease, it’s very important that we ensure quality care for those that suffer from Alzheimer’s. you can help those in need by making a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

one of our IT guys was over at my cube today loading some upgrades on my desktop. and while we were waiting for the software to finish processing, we somehow got on the subject of his dating life. OK, before i get flamed on my own blog please note for the record, he essentially brought it up during a lull in the conversation, OK, not me. anyway, he’s been with his current girlfriend for about four months and they met online through a service called : Love Different. he told me it was a site specifically for those into the Goth lifestyle. it took me by surprise since he looks pretty clean cut at work with no signs of dark eyeshadow or eyeliner. but apparently he’s required to look a certain way at work and then outside of work, he tells me that i probably wouldn’t recognize him. anyway, he speaks highly of the online dating site which offers its members free online video chat capabilities, access to their exclusive discussion forums, full access to member profiles and even a “send a wink” function which lets a person know that you’re interested. Darkyria is a feature rich site and is well on its way of become “the” place to be for those into Goth, extreme music and the alternative lifestyle.

my friend paul and i used to work out at a gym a while back where most of the guys we encountered there were seriously workin’ those free weights every single day. paul and i are just your average joes in terms of body type so it got a bit intimidating to say the least to lift weights next to guys that looked like Hulk Hogan and Lou Ferrigno. at one point my workout partner and i even considered bodybuilding supplements to help us appear less out of our league there at the gym but the prices at the local retailer kinda cooled that idea. too bad the website wasn’t around back then. the site specializes in bodybuilding supplements, weight loss products, high quality vitamins and nutritional supplements. they’ve got a great selection of products by the top manufacturers and at the lowest prices around. head on over the and pump yourself up!

VPS Hosting

internet buzz 1 Comment »

i’m currently hosted on a shared hosting plan in which this website is on the same server along with hundreds of other websites run by other people. yes it’s economical but since all of us on the server share the same RAM and CPU resources, there are some downsides to this. for instance, a website or user on the server could end up draining all the server’s resources while the rest of the websites on the same server suffer because of it. for those that rather not share their server space but can’t quite afford purchasing their own dedicated server, there’s another option available called the virtual private server. VPS Hosting is where one physical server is partitioned into multiple servers that act independently from one another. so with VPS, a webmaster can have freedom to install software of his or her own choosing, have root access to the server and basically feel more in-control over the websites on his or her server. Network Solutions is currently offering Virtual Private Server plans at three different tiers but all include Red Hat Fedora Core 6 OS, 256 MB RAM (1 GB Bursted RAM), 1 dedicated IP, Virtuozzo™ and Plesk™ control panels. Network Solutions also offers a 30 day money back guarantee so you can always try out VPS and see if it’s right for you without being obligated to pay for the service if you find that it’s not. plus you can’t go wrong with Network Solutions where their customer service was recently recognized by J.D. Power and Associates as “An Outstanding customer Service Experience”. be sure to check out their website for all the details.

blog on your own domain

i’ve noticed that a good number of bloggers on my blogroll are still hosted on free blogging sites like blogger and wordpress. yes, it’s convenient and easy to setup but there’s something to be said for blogging on your very own domain. for those that don’t want to fiddle around with hosting packages, blogging software and add-ons, i guess the free hosted sites are the way to go. but for those that want more control over how your blog looks and what tools you’re using, you’ve got to get your own website. i’ve own this domain since 2002 and i wouldn’t have it any other way. i have the freedom to install any webtool i desire and tinker around to my hearts content. yes, you’ve got to invest some time to customize your site but it’s all worth it in the end. so, if you are one of those bloggers that is ready to make the switch, be sure to check out the web hosting plans over at Top Hosting center. they’ve got a great package called the Top Host Special that includes 250 GB of space, 3000 GB of bandwidth, POP3, PHP, MySQL, automated backups, 24/7 live support and more for just $4.95 a month. they are also currently running a contest where you can win free hosting for a year plus a free domain name. all you have to do is blog your thoughts on the importance of owning your own domain. simple as that. judges will read through all the eligible blog posts and determine the best post around Nov. 15th. it’s a great opportunity to earn a free year of hosting with absolutely no strings attached. head on over to Top Hosting center for all the details.

Sansa Clip

OK, i think i’ve found my next mp3 player: Sansa Clip MP3 Player it’s a tiny flash based player that’s supposed to compete with the ipod shuffles but it has additional features like a nice OLED screen and playlist capabilities. the great thing is that they’re cheap and so they’ll be great for jogging or for workouts where you don’t have to worry about having an expensive music player around. and from early reviews, it has been said that the player’s got better sound quality than the previous Sansa models. i’m going to lobby hard for one of these players with the argument that listening to good sounding music will help me exercise longer and more frequently. isn’t that a good enough reason to buy me one of these things?

read the review of the new Sansa Clip Mp3 Player over at anything but ipods.

with the recent forecast from the Energy Department estimating that this winter’s heating costs will most likely increase, more and more homeowners are seeking alternative ways to heat and cool their home. it’s inevitable since our heating oil and natural gas originate from non-renewable sources. there’s a real need to find ways to live on earth without depleting our natural resources. BP is teaming up with the U.S. Department of Energy to sponsor an event to do just that. the event being held at the National Mall in Washington D.C. is called the BP Solar Decathlon.
