my Obamicon!

links and stuff, ramblings No Comments »

In honor of the Inauguration, I thought I’d post my own version of Shepard Fairey’s iconic poster of Barack Obama during his 2008 campaign. Paste Magazine recently launched an online app that makes it quick and easy to produce a customized version of the poster. It’s a lot of fun and I couldn’t help myself and posted multiple versions. Post your own at Obamicon.Me. If you do end up posting one, please add a comment here so that we can all see it. :)

man, this is history in the making! Can’t you just feel the excitement?

freebie apps for the new laptop

links and stuff, ramblings 4 Comments »

new laptop
Like a great many people this Christmas, I got a brand new laptop to play around with. With prices so low this past holiday season, it was pretty much a “no-brainer” in purchasing one. and besides, we’ve had our old HP laptop for over four years now so we were long overdue in replacing it. We are now proud owners of a 17″ widescreen HP model with 4 gigs of RAM and a 320 gig hard drive. Like most models, mine didn’t come with a lot software so I’ve been spending the last few days downloading free apps online to get my new laptop up to snuff. Why spend hundreds of dollars on new software when there are tons of great freeware available online, right? Here’s what I’ve found so far. Feel free to let me know what your personal favorites are.

Firewall: Comodo Firewall Pro - the built in firewall in the router just isn’t enough nowadays so this freebie is highly recommended.

Anti-virus: AVG Anti-Virus - Why pay $60 or more for virus protection when AVG does an effective job at absolutely no cost?

Anti-spyware: Spybot Search and Destroy - I hate spyware so this app is definitely a must. the app is recommended by all the popular computer magazines.

Office Suite: a limited trial offer for Microsoft Office came with my new PC. But I’m not shelling out hundreds of dollars for the full version! are you kidding me?? I’m simply going to download IBM Lotus Symphony 1.2 for free. The software suite has all the necessary capabilities found in Office including word processing, spreadsheets and creating/editing presentations. now that’s what I call value!

Photo Editing Software: Paint.Net v. 3.3.6 - Yes, PhotoShop would be nice but it simply costs too much. Thankfully there’s a free alternative with

other essentials: Mozilla Firefox, Audacity, Skype, Notepad++ and VLC Media Player.

Virgin Mobile Shuttle

links and stuff, internet buzz 3 Comments »

After a disappointing year of issuing lower end brand phones, Virgin Mobile has finally decided to give its long suffering customers a decent phone for a change. The new VM Shuttle features a 1.3 megapixel camera with video, music and bluetooth capabilities. Yes, I know that Virgin Mobile’s main focus is to provide a no-frills, no-contract, prepaid wireless service but you have to admit the majority of their phone designs felt old, tired and several generations behind the times. The new VM Shuttle on the other hand seems to be more up-to-date so that now I won’t have to stick out like a sore thumb whenever I’m using my prepaid cellular phone. hell, with the new phone, I might even pass for a verizon or sprint cellular customer! heh. :P

Crocs, the new Birkenstocks

links and stuff, ramblings 5 Comments »

crocs, the new Birkenstocks. yuck.
reading Steve Tuttle’s follow up on his Croc article in this week’s Newsweek gave me a good laugh. Tuttle ranted a couple weeks ago about how Crocs are a fashion nightmare and that everyone should come to their sense and stop wearing these ugly things. He begged his readers to “Just stop. When you wake up tomorrow and look at your options, choose flip-flops. Go barefoot. Wear boots. Anything but Crocs. By next summer—if we all work together—we can have this plague of bad taste virtually eliminated. Yes! We! Can!” I thought it was hilarious. Especially since I wondered about the unexplained popularity of these plastic ugliness not too long ago. My kids even own some god awful shade of blue Crocs. Yes, they’re convenient to slip on and off in a rush but man, do they have to look like that? They’re like the Birkenstocks of the 2008. ugh. Apparently the article hit a nerve because Tuttle got inundated with emails, not surprisingly from bitter Croc lovers. In his followup, Tuttle was truly grateful for all the fuss - “The good news for me is that all of this angry reading of my awful prose drove up my traffic numbers, which only encourages my editors to let me commit more acts of bad writing. The Crocs story alone got millions of hits, so you haters can look forward to hilarious rants about people talking in public on cell phones and nasty airline food. You have only yourselves to thank.

join the fight against bad taste - ban Crocs where you live! :P

Don’t be a Dorc!

Jon and Kate and Figure 8

links and stuff, movies and TV 2 Comments »

hey, I didn’t realize (until recently) that the production company behind Jon and Kate plus 8 is located pretty close by. The folks at Figure 8 films are the ones responsible for filming, editing and creating each episode that appears on TLC. and they’re located in Carrboro, NC which is approximately 30 minutes from where I live.
figure 8 films
It’s surprising to learn how grueling their production schedule is with the Gosselins. They are required to produce a certain number of episodes each season (currently season 3) and I think the episode count for this season is over 40 now. I don’t know the exact number but it seems awfully high especially compared to the usual 22 episode requirement for most other television shows. I can’t imagine the amount of pressure the Gosselins, the crew and the producers must be under to come up with something viewable and interesting for each episode. And seeing how uninspired the last string of episodes were, it’s becoming obvious the Gosselins (and producers) are running out of ideas. And what about the lil’ kids? They’re probably suffering from all that pressure to “perform” on camera - to look cute, to recite lines, to be energetic and presentable etc... it just seems a bit unfair for the lil’ ones. with the adults involved, I can understand since they made their own decision to produce a reality show but Mady, Cara, Alexis, Leah, Collin, Aaden, Joel and Hannah didn’t really have a say about any of this. poor kids. and you can tell already that Mady is going to have some emotional issues to deal with as she gets older.

Rumor has it that the Gosselins are moving to North Carolina to be closer to the production company. It has been reported that it’ll be a large custom built home (around 8000 sq. feet) with separate rooms and an extra kitchen specifically for the film crew. It’ll be interesting to see if the new house will be located in the Triangle area or not.

my manga?

OK, since I’ve seen so many bloggers post their newly-made avatars from, I thought I’d give it a go. The online avatar maker is pretty similar to the one found on yahoo. You basically tweak through all the facial features until you get to where the character sort of resembles yourself, I guess. I don’t think I got the avatar quite right but… umm, he looks *asian* at least. hhmmm.. actually the avatar looks more like my 11 year old than myself. oh well, it was fun for about five minutes at least. So, have you made yours yet?

what would life would be like without art and music? obviously life would be pretty dull without them. so we need to do our part to keep the arts alive and well in our town. support your local artists by visiting local galleries and enjoying live music at the local bars and clubs. places like St. Augustine, Florida even hold monthly events to celebrate their local artists. the St. Augustine Artwalk is held the first weekend of every month and features great exhibits, entertainment and refreshments provided by over 20 local galleries. complimentary transportation is even provided for by the St. Augustine Sightseeing Trains and Old Town Trolley Tours. so park your car in the designated free parking area and get free shuttle service to where all the various events are being held. the First Friday Weekend Art Walk is a great concept and should help promote the local artists and musicians in the area. i’m sure it’s tough getting the attention of the average joe especially in the days of the internet, cell phones and multimedia. so events like these help bring in a large gathering of people so that deserving artists can get the much needed exposure. let us all celebrate the arts by participating in the ArtWalk! check it out!

well lookie here! it’s the freebie of the day!!

A one year subscription to Elle Decor Magazine is available for those that are interested in interior decorating and design.

Elle Decor presents top-of-the-line interiors with a younger, more sophisticated, and more whimsical air than most of its competitors. Nestled somewhere between pristine Architectural Digest and the Gen-X Wallpaper, Elle Decor is a colorful, imaginative, and reliable source for interior design ideas and trends. It’s a little bit of fantasy for all tastes, with its visits to gardens, grand estates, city townhouses, tiny apartments, bungalows, and country homes. The magazine also synthesizes fashion and decor by including shots from runways, swatches of garment and decorating fabrics, and matching decor accessories. Correspondents travel the world to report on food, style, and interior design, and every issue includes a handy listing of its findings for globetrotting collectors and foodies. Aware that some of their readers are urban dwellers with limited space, the editors offer a monthly “Solutions” column with ideas from various designers on solving small-space challenges.
